B vitamins are water-soluble vitamins that play an essential role in the optimal functioning of the human body.

Because our bodies are unable to produce B vitamins on their own, we need to obtain them through our diet or supplementation.

Thiamine, also known as Vitamin B1, plays an important role in the metabolising of food, which is then converted into energy for the body. It is essential for the prevention of Wernicke-Korsakoff and Beri-Beri disease, both of which are caused by vitamin B1 deficiency,  and affect the brain, heart, and digestive and nervous systems. Excessive consumption of alcohol has shown to be linked to a lack of vitamin B1.

Vitamin B2 acts as an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory. Because of these properties, it has been known to boost the immune system. It has also been shown to assist in the prevention of migraines and assist in red blood cell formation, which is important for the transport of oxygen throughout the body.

Niacin (Vitamin B3) plays an important role in the functioning of the metabolism. Without it, our bodies are unable to break down food into energy. A lack of vitamin B3 can lead to the disorder known as pellagra, which affects the body both mentally and physically in that it can result in cases of dementia, dermatitis and diarrhoea.

If you are experiencing numbness and burning in the hands and feet, headaches, fatigue and insomnia, you may be suffering from a lack of vitamin B5. This B vitamin is needed for many biochemical functions in the body and is particularly important for the breakdown of carbohydrates and fats into energy. It has also been shown to assist in the management of rheumatoid arthritis and reduce pain and stiffness.

Vitamin B6 plays an important role in the psychological processes of our brain by assisting with the production of serotonin and GABA. Both of these chemicals assist with stress management, anxiety, memory and depression. Symptoms of a lack of vitamin B6 include scaling of the lips and cracks in the corners of the mouth, glossitis – swelling of the tongue – depression and a weakened immune system.

Biotin plays an important role in the conversion of nutrients to energy and is most commonly known for its ability to assist with skin, hair and nail health, but there is a lot more to this little nutrient and its benefits. The word ‘biotin’ originates from the Greek word ‘biotos’ which means ‘life’ and / or ‘sustenance’. Beyond skin, hair and nail health, biotin helps keep your eyes, liver and nervous system healthy too. During pregnancy, biotin is especially critical for embryonic growth.

Folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, is most prominent in dark leafy greens. It is particularly important for its ability to support cell division and promotes healthy development of fetal growth while reducing the risk of birth defects. Most people associate folic acid with pregnant women, however this nutrient is important for both sexes as it assists with heart and hair health too. There has also been research that suggests that sufficient folic acid may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Vitamin B12 is essential for DNA synthesis, red blood cell formation, and the optimal functioning of our nervous system. Some common symptoms of a lack of vitamin B12 include:
-weakness, tiredness and / or fatigue;
-heart palpitations and / or shortness of breath
-pale complexion
-nerve issues such as numbness, tingling, muscle weakness and or difficulty walking
-vision loss
-behavioural changes, and psychological effects such as depression and / or memory loss

Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient, most obtained through animal sources. Individuals who follow a vegan diet (meaning they do not eat any animal products including dairy and eggs) can often suffer from a vitamin B12 deficiency.
